"A Wake-Up Call for Westminster”: Liberal Democrats Demand Sweeping Action as Foreign Interference Review Launched.

The government’s announcement of an urgent independent review into foreign financial interference in UK politics is a welcome—if dangerously overdue—step towards securing British democracy. For the Liberal Democrats, this review validates years of warnings that our political system has become a playground for hostile actors, from the Kremlin to Beijing, exploiting a "culture of impunity" that has been allowed to fester for too long.

Following the shocking conviction of former Reform UK politician Nathan Gill—jailed for accepting bribes from pro-Russian handlers—Ministers have commissioned Philip Rycroft to lead a review into the vulnerability of our electoral systems. But for Liberal Democrat Foreign Affairs Spokesperson Calum Miller MP,  this inquiry must be the beginning, not the end, of a radical cleanup of British politics.

Ending the "Culture of Impunity"
The Liberal Democrats have consistently argued that the UK’s defenses against foreign interference are woefully outdated. In a recent Commons debate, Calum Miller MP struck a sombre tone, warning that "functioning democracy is not an end state, but a continuous task."

"The first duty of the state is to protect the freedom of its citizens," Miller told MPs. "Today’s debate has highlighted how foreign states with malign intent are seeking to undermine our security... and take direct steps to subvert our democracy."

Miller has been particularly vocal about the need to "Trump-proof" and "Putin-proof" UK institutions, warning that authoritarian regimes view our openness as a weakness to be exploited. He argues that we must clamp down not just on obvious bribery, but on the subtler "insidious creep of cronyism" where foreign influence buys access to the highest levels of government.

The Reform UK Scandal: A Symptom, Not an Anomaly.
The case of Nathan Gill has drawn a sharp rebuke from the party. David Chadwick, the Welsh Liberal Democrat MP, did not mince words, calling the scandal a "stain on our democracy."

"Taking money linked to a hostile foreign state to influence democratic debate is a betrayal of public trust," Chadwick said. "It is telling that the UK Government is now stepping in after Reform UK failed to launch a serious internal investigation... When parties fail to take responsibility for their own standards, independent scrutiny is essential."

The Liberal Democrats argue this is not an isolated incident but a symptom of a lax regulatory environment that allows "dark money" and opaque donations to flow into party coffers unchecked.

Championing a Rules-Based Order
Liberal Democrat Leader Ed Davey has long championed a foreign policy rooted in liberal values, arguing that domestic security cannot be separated from international stability. He has warned that flirting with authoritarianism—or turning a blind eye to it for economic gain—compromises the UK's standing as a reliable NATO partner.
"We are a trusted member of NATO; we would not be a trusted member if we were Putin-friendly," Davey has stated, emphasizing that the UK must lead the "coalition of the willing" against autocracy.

For Davey, the review must lead to tangible legislative changes that align with the party’s Fair Deal Manifesto commitments. These include stricter controls on donations, enhanced transparency for shell companies, and closing loopholes that allow foreign powers to purchase political influence.

The Liberal Democrat Plan for Safe Democracy
As the Rycroft review begins, the Liberal Democrats are calling for it to adopt the rigorous standards they have set out in their policy platform:
Protecting Democracy from Interference: The party demands a complete overhaul of electoral financing laws to prevent foreign money from influencing UK elections, including real-time reporting of donations.
Defending National Security: A commitment to robustly challenge hostile states like Russia and China, ensuring that the UK’s openness is defended by "robust defenses" rather than left vulnerable by complacency.
Transparency & Accountability: A demand for a statutory public register of all financial interests for MPs and peers, ensuring that no representative can hide a conflict of interest behind a veil of secrecy.

The Liberal Democrats stand ready to support any measures that strengthen the UK’s resilience. As Calum Miller summarised: "We must have more scrutiny of Russian money in British politics... We should stand against the toxic, divisive politics that hostile states wish to export to the UK."

The review is a start. But the Liberal Democrats will be watching to ensure it results in action, not just another report left to gather dust while our democracy remains under siege.
