Historic Victory in Parliament: The Tide is Turning on Brexit’s Economic Nightmare!

Today marks a historic moment in the fight to fix the Conservative Party's disastrous Brexit deal.

The Liberal Democrats have secured a victory in the House of Commons, narrowly passing the first hurdle for a Bill that would finally compel the government to negotiate a bespoke UK-EU Customs Union.

The vote—won by a single, vital casting vote from the Deputy Speaker—proves that even within the governing Labour benches, there is growing and undeniable recognition that the current Brexit deal is making Britain broke.

Labour’s Red Lines Are Crumbling

Liberal Democrat Leader, Sir Ed Davey, hailed the result as a crucial turning point, stating:
“Today was a historic victory for the Liberal Democrats – winning a vote in parliament to finally end the economic nightmare of the Conservatives’ broken Brexit deal.”

Sir Keir Starmer has spent too long burying his head in the sand, clinging to 'red lines' that serve only to stifle the UK economy. But today, the dam burst. Thirteen courageous Labour MPs rebelled against the official instruction to abstain, voting with the Liberal Democrats to back Dr. Al Pinkerton’s motion.

The Liberal Democrat Proposal: A Bespoke Customs Union for Growth

This is not a call to simply rejoin the old Customs Union, but to negotiate a modern, flexible, and ambitious new arrangement. The Liberal Democrat proposal is to negotiate a bespoke UK-EU Customs Union by 2030, similar in structure to the one the EU has with Turkey, but tailored to the UK’s needs.

Liberal Democrat Europe Spokesperson, Dr. Al Pinkerton MP, explained the details:
Coverage of Goods: The new arrangement would cover most goods, dramatically reducing red tape and checks for manufacturers and businesses. Crucially, the plan would exclude agriculture, allowing the UK to maintain a level of independence in this sector.

Consultation on Trade Deals: To address the key argument made against joining a customs union, our proposal demands that the UK would be consulted during negotiations on new EU trade deals with third countries. This ensures a British voice is still heard on global trade matters.

The Economic Benefit: As Dr. Pinkerton told Parliament, the current deal is “an abject economic failure.” He stressed that his Bill would: “cut red tape, unlock investment and restore certainty to British business.”

This closer trading relationship is estimated by analysis to have the potential to generate at least £25 billion a year for the public finances, money that could be invested directly into our struggling public services.

A Direct Challenge to the Prime Minister

The public is crying out for real change and a solution to the cost-of-living crisis. This is why Sir Ed Davey states that a Customs Union is the single biggest step the government could take:
“A customs union with the EU is the single biggest step the government could take to grow our economy, put money back into people’s pockets and generate billions for our public services.”

The result of this vote is a clear mandate from Parliament. Sir Ed concluded with a direct challenge to Sir Keir Starmer:
“The prime minister must now listen to Parliament and the public, drop his self-imposed red lines and finally go for proper growth through an ambitious trade deal with the EU.”

We stand ready to work with all MPs—from all parties—who want a better, stronger future for Britain.
