Join the Reading Revolution: Why Your Help Can Give Kids a Fair Deal!
Every child deserves a "fair deal" in life. This starts with a great education, but right now, too many children are being left behind because they don't have enough help with their reading.
A brilliant charity called Schoolreaders is on a mission to change this. They match kind volunteers with local primary schools to listen to children read. It’s a simple idea that makes a huge difference!
The Reading Gap
In 2025, a worrying one in four children left primary school without being able to read as well as they should. When kids struggle to read, it makes it much harder for them to enjoy other subjects like science or history. It can also make them feel less confident.
Munira Wilson MP, Liberal Democrat Education Spokesperson has warned that the number of children falling behind is "staggering." She believes we need to do much more to help students catch up.
Why Volunteering is "Magic"
The Liberal Democrats believe that investing in our children’s future is the best way to make the country a better place. Our policy is to make sure every child has the support they need to reach their full potential. Schoolreaders helps do exactly.
"It’s helping children discover the joy in reading," she said. "Our volunteers always tell us they learn as much from the children as the children learn from them." Schoolreaders spokesperson.
It’s Not Just About Kids:
Did you know that many adults in the UK also find reading tricky? Right now, around 7 million adults struggle with basic literacy. This makes it hard for them to do things many of us take for granted, like filling out a job application, reading a bus timetable, or even helping their own children with homework.
When we help a child master reading, we aren't just helping them pass a test; we are unlocking their full potential. A child who reads well is more likely to stay in school, find a job they love, and even stay healthier as they grow up.
But it’s not just good for the individual—it’s great for all of us! When every person can read and write well, our society becomes fairer and more prosperous. There is less inequality, our economy grows stronger, and communities become more connected. By sitting down with a child for a few minutes a week, you are helping to build a world where everyone has the tools to succeed.
Will You Be a Reading Hero?
This year, Schoolreaders wants to give 1.5 million reading sessions to children. To do this, they need more people like you to help out for just an hour or two a week.
"Volunteers are the bedrock of our communities... They deserve recognition and all our appreciation." Munira Wilson MP
By giving a little bit of time, you can help a child find a love for books that will last a lifetime. It’s about more than just words on a page; it’s about giving every child the "fair deal" the Liberal Democrats are fighting for.
