Liberal Democrats Demand Reform MPs Forfeit ‘Tainted’ X Profits Amid AI Abuse Scandal.
The Liberal Democrats have intensified their campaign for online safety by calling on Reform UK MPs to immediately donate all income received from Elon Musk’s X (formerly Twitter) to charity. The demand follows a disturbing surge in AI-generated sexualised images of women and children produced by the platform's "Grok" tool.
Victoria Collins MP, the Liberal Democrat spokesperson for Science, Innovation, and Technology, labelled the payments "tainted money," arguing that it is morally indefensible for public servants to profit from a platform currently facilitating the creation of such harmful content.
A Failure of Tech Oversight
The controversy centres on Grok, X’s inbuilt AI tool, which has been used to generate vast quantities of images featuring women and children in sexually provocative poses. Rather than disabling the feature to protect the public, X restricted it to paying subscribers—a move the Liberal Democrats view as monetising a safeguarding failure.
According to the latest Register of Members’ Financial Interests, several Reform figures have profited significantly from the platform’s engagement-sharing scheme in 2025:
Nigel Farage: ~£9,000
Lee Anderson: ~£3,500
Richard Tice: ~£3,500
Rupert Lowe (Independent): Over £40,000
The Liberal Democrat Stand
The Liberal Democrats have long championed a "safety by design" approach to tech. Victoria Collins has been vocal in her condemnation of the platform's refusal to implement robust barriers against the generation of abusive imagery.
"The spread of these AI-generated sexual abuse images is a disgusting violation of the rights of women and children. It is astounding that X software is complicit in the generation of sexual abuse imagery and they won’t do the slightest thing to stop it."— Victoria Collins MP
Collins further challenged the Reform leadership to match their rhetoric with action:
"Reform are making thousands of pounds from stoking division on their X accounts. This is tainted money earned from a platform that refuses to tackle sexual abuse. Liberal Democrats are calling for Nigel Farage and other Reform MPs... to do the right thing and donate every single penny earned from X to sexual abuse charities."
Reform Response
When questioned, Nigel Farage avoided committing to a donation, instead claiming that the costs of his social media staff exceed the income he receives from the site. While he expressed disapproval of the Grok-generated images, the Liberal Democrats maintain that "costs of business" is no excuse for retaining funds generated by a platform failing basic safety standards.
