Liberal Democrats push for safer roads for horses and riders.

The Liberal Democrats are stepping up the fight to make Britain’s roads safer for everyone, including horses and riders, as Lee Dillon MP secures a crucial Westminster Hall Debate on Horse and Rider Road Safety.

The debate will take place on Wednesday 14th, 4.30pm–5.30pm, and comes at a time when incidents involving horses on the road remain unacceptably high. Despite clear guidance in the Highway Code, too many riders are still being placed in danger by careless driving.

In 2024 alone, 3,118 incidents were recorded and 58 horses were killed, with the majority of cases involving vehicles passing too fast or too close.

Road safety must work for everyone"

“Despite existing Highway Code guidance, too many horses and riders are still being put in danger. In 2024 alone, thousands of incidents were recorded and dozens of horses lost their lives. This is simply not good enough. Road safety must work for everyone.” -Lee Dillon MP

Working closely with the British Horse Society, the British Horse Association and Project EDWARD, Lee Dillon MP will press ministers to strengthen protections for riders and improve driver education to prevent further tragedies.

“Simple changes – better awareness, clearer enforcement and stronger education for drivers – can save lives. Horses are not obstacles; they are living beings, and riders deserve to feel safe using our roads.” Lee Dillon MP

A clear Liberal Democrat priority
This campaign reflects long-standing Liberal Democrats priorities on road safety, community protection and evidence-led policy. The party has consistently argued for:

-Stronger enforcement of Highway Code rules designed to protect vulnerable road users
-Improved driver education and public awareness campaigns
-A transport system that works for pedestrians, cyclists, riders and motorists alike
