National Security at Risk: MP Demands Full Inquiry Into ‘Deep-Rooted’ Russian Infiltration

Following a series of alarming revelations regarding Russian influence in British institutions, veteran Liberal Democrat MP Cameron Thomas is calling for a comprehensive statutory inquiry into Kremlin interference in UK politics.

The demand comes as the impact of Russian hybrid warfare is felt locally. Officials at Gloucester City Council recently discovered a £17.5 million deficit, directly attributed to a 2021 Russian cyberattack that compromised the authority’s accounting systems for years.

A Pattern of Infiltration
Thomas, a Royal Air Force veteran with over 20 years of experience in security and hybrid warfare, argues that these incidents are not isolated. He highlighted several recent scandals that point to a deeper systemic issue:

Political Corruption: The recent jailing of former MEP Nathan Gill for accepting Russian bribes.
Financial Ties: Reports of a Conservative Peer assisting Roman Abramovich in a legal battle over £2.5 billion in frozen assets.

Institutional Influence: The legacy of the "Westminster Russia Forum" (formerly Conservative Friends of Russia), which Thomas claims provided the Kremlin with access to UK politicians for over a decade.

The Call for Transparency
In a strongly worded statement, Thomas emphasized that the UK remains vulnerable because past interference has never been fully investigated.

"Russia observes and tests our national resilience on a daily basis," Thomas said. "The circumstances at Gloucester City Council serve as a reminder that the war in Ukraine is far closer to home than we might think."

Thomas is specifically calling for:
A Full Statutory Inquiry: To investigate the extent of foreign infiltration within UK political parties.

Release of the 'Russia Report':
The publication of the full, unredacted report withheld during Boris Johnson’s premiership.
Seizure of Assets: Moving beyond freezing Russian assets to seizing them to support Ukraine’s defense.

"Nothing Less Will Suffice"
With tensions between Russia and the West at an all-time high, Thomas warns that the British public deserves to know the truth before they next head to the polls.

"We must fully understand the level of foreign interference and influence within our institutions. Nothing less than a full statutory inquiry will bring this malign activity into the light. It is crucial we see these results before the next General Election."
