The Scandal of the "Antique" NHS: Why Outdated Equipment is the Latest Symptom of Government Neglect. -The Lib Dem Fix....

The British public is used to hearing about crumbling RAAC concrete and leaking roofs, but a new crisis is lurking in the very machines meant to save our lives. Shocking new data uncovered by the Liberal Democrats has revealed that 8 in 10 hospitals are still relying on outdated medical equipment, including X-ray machines and MRI scanners that are over a decade old.

According to figures obtained through Freedom of Information requests from 48 hospital trusts, nearly 400 vital diagnostic machines (393 in total) are currently over ten years old. This flies in the face of NHS England guidance, which states that scanners and X-ray equipment should be replaced every ten years to ensure reliability and image clarity.

The Scale of the Crisis
The findings paint a grim picture of an underfunded healthcare system forced to "make do and mend" with technology from a different era:

38 out of 48 responding hospital trusts are using X-ray machines at least a decade old.
The oldest X-ray machine in use was found at the Shrewsbury and Telford Hospital Trust, clocking in at a staggering 30 years old.

Plymouth Hospitals Trust is currently operating an MRI scanner that is 18 years old.

Out of the trusts that responded, 21 were using MRI scanners that had surpassed the recommended ten-year lifespan.

When equipment reaches this age, the risk of breakdown increases and the quality of imaging can decrease. For a patient waiting for a cancer diagnosis or a life-altering scan, a mechanical failure is not just an inconvenience—it is a risk to their health.

"A Scandal": The Liberal Democrat Response
Liberal Democrat Health and Care Spokesperson Helen Morgan MP has slammed the current state of hospital infrastructure, noting that the burden falls squarely on patients and overstretched NHS workers.

"It is a scandal that life-saving diagnoses are being left to machines that may be older than the staff operating them. Our patients are being put at risk by ancient and unreliable equipment, whilst our hard-working staff are being pushed to breaking point. "
"The potential for error from poor quality machines doesn’t bear thinking about. No one should have to worry about whether they will get an accurate reading from decade-old equipment." — Helen Morgan MP

The Liberal Democrat Plan: A Ten-Year Fix
We cannot expect 21st-century healthcare to be delivered on 20th-century hardware. The Liberal Democrats are calling for a fundamental shift in how we fund our national health service.

Liberal Democrat party policy focuses on a long-term capital investment programme to move away from the "sticking plaster" approach.

National coordinated action responsible for:
A Ten Year Strategy: Overseeing a decade of sustained funding to modernise the NHS estate and primary care buildings.

Replacing "Knackered" Equipment: Ensuring hospital trusts have the dedicated capital to replace scanners and X-ray machines before they become obsolete.

Fixing the Fabric of the NHS: Prioritising urgent repairs for sinking floors and crumbling roofs, tackling the multi-billion pound maintenance backlog.

As Helen Morgan MP puts it: "Patients deserve better. That is why we’re calling for a new investment programme... This would replace knackered machines, and repair sinking floors and crumbling roofs that have become so prevalent in our NHS."

The Liberal Democrats believe that you cannot fix the NHS without fixing the buildings and tools our doctors and nurses use every day. It is time to consign "antique" medical equipment to the history books and give patients the modern care they deserve.
