Leading the Fight for England’s Rainforests: Lib Dems Target Global Protection for Chalk Streams.

The Liberal Democrats have stepped up their campaign to rescue Britain’s "glittering" rivers from years of neglect and environmental degradation. Pippa Heylings MP, is set to introduce a transformative Bill in Parliament this week, seeking UNESCO World Heritage status for the nation’s precious chalk streams.

Known as "England’s rainforests," chalk streams are a globally rare habitat. Astonishingly, 85% of the world’s chalk streams are found in England, yet they remain under constant threat from sewage dumping and over-abstraction.

A National Treasure Under Siege
For the Liberal Democrats, protecting these waterways is not just an environmental necessity but a matter of national heritage. Pippa Heylings MP, has been vocal about the urgent need for a higher tier of legal protection for rivers such as the River Cam, Granta, Mel, Rhee, and Shep.

"There is nothing more British than a 'chuckling' stream or a sparkling rivers. As some of the rarest habitats on Earth, these waters aren't just beautiful—they’re a national treasure. I'm introducing a Bill in Parliament next week that would secure UNESCO World Heritage status... to provide the legal protection and restoration they desperately need."— Pippa Heylings MP

Beyond "Toothless" Regulation
The Liberal Democrats have long argued that current protections are failing. While the government has introduced a Water White Paper, the Lib Dems maintain that it "pulls its punches" against corporate polluters.

Tim Farron MP, the Liberal Democrat Environment Spokesperson, has been a leading voice in the House of Commons, demanding that the government move beyond rhetoric to "practical solutions" that safeguard these ecosystems.
"Our proposal today aims to highlight the scandal of the pollution of our waterways and it calls for some practical solutions that will make a difference," Tim Farron MP stated during a recent debate. "Politics allows us to establish the structures that will enable that stewardship of our waterways to be effective, to mean more than just words, but to mean practical change for the better."— Tim Farron MP

The Lib Dem Plan for Clean Water
The party is calling for a complete overhaul of the industry to ensure that chalk streams are no longer treated as "afterthoughts." Key policies include:

Replacing Ofwat: Establishing a "Clean Water Authority" with the power to revoke licenses and issue unlimited fines.
Blue Flag Status for Rivers: Implementing a new 'Blue Flag' standard specifically for chalk streams to mandate high water quality and transparency.
Transforming Water Companies: Reforming firms into "Public Benefit Companies" so that environmental health is prioritised over shareholder dividends.

The proposed legislation would mandate restoration and prevent these unique ecosystems from being pushed to collapse.

The Lib Dems are clear, it is time for a "Fair Deal" for our environment. By seeking international recognition through UNESCO, the party aims to ensure that no future government or water executive can ignore the sanctity of these "irreplaceable habitats" again.
