Protecting Privacy: Liberal Democrats Lead the Charge Against Non-Consensual Filming.

Liberal Democrats have always stood for the fundamental right to privacy and the freedom to live without fear of harassment. Today, that freedom is being eroded by a digital Wild West where strangers can film you without consent and broadcast your private moments to millions for profit.

Liberal Democrats believe in a society where everyone is free to enjoy a night out without the fear of being secretly filmed, objectified, and exploited for profit.

Current laws have failed to keep pace with technology, leaving a "digital loophole" that allows predators to harass women by posting non-consensual footage online.

With 70% of Britons now calling for this practice to be made illegal, the public message is clear: the law is no longer fit for purpose in the digital age.

Standing Up to Digital Harassment

A recent BBC investigation pulled back the curtain on a disturbing trend: women being secretly filmed on nights out, with the footage later sold or uploaded to social media platforms to be mocked and objectified. This isn't just "content creation", it is a targeted form of gender-based harassment.

Liberal Democrat MP Wera Hobhouse is taking decisive action to close this legal loophole. Her new Bill aims to criminalize the filming and uploading of strangers without consent, ensuring our laws finally protect individuals from online humiliation.

"No one should log on to find themselves online without consent. The law must catch up. No woman should fear that a night out will end with them being objectified and humiliated online for someone else's profit." Wera Hobhouse MP

Why This Matters

For Liberal Democrats, this is about individual dignity. By modernizing our legal framework, we can:
Empower victims to take legal action against digital predators.
Hold platforms accountable for hosting non-consensual content.
Ensure public spaces remain safe and inclusive for everyone.

The Liberal Democrats are committed to a fairer, safer society where your image belongs to you, not a stranger with a smartphone.
