A Vital Lifeline: Liberal Democrats Welcome Ukraine Permission Extension (UPE)
The Government’s recent decision to extend the Ukraine Permission Extension (UPE) scheme marks a significant victory for compassion and common sense. For the thousands of Ukrainian families who have sought sanctuary in the UK since Putin’s illegal invasion over four years ago, this news provides a much-needed reprieve from the looming shadow of uncertainty.
Since the conflict began, our communities have been enriched by our Ukrainian neighbors. They are our colleagues, our children’s classmates, and vital contributors to our local economies. The Liberal Democrats have been consistent in calling for the Government to provide these families with the long-term stability they deserve, rather than leaving them in a cycle of short-term fixes.
Breaking the Cycle of Uncertainty
The new measures include a 24 month extension to the scheme and a crucial widening of the application window, expanding it from a narrow 28 days to a more manageable 90 days.
"To see the Home Office announce a 24-month extension to the UPS, while expanding the visa application window from 28 days to 90 days is a significant step forward. Eligible Ukrainians and their families will be able to stay in the UK for a maximum of three and a half years under the UPS, on top of time already granted under previous Ukraine visa routes." Standing Together Against Aggression
While we celebrate this domestic progress, we cannot ignore the harrowing reality on the ground in Ukraine. More than four years into this conflict, the Ukrainian people continue to stand as the front line in the defense of global democracy.
Despite international attempts to broker peace, including Donald Trump’s floundering efforts to arrange a ceasefire, Vladimir Putin has shown no genuine interest in de-escalation. Instead, he continues to project the illusion of diplomacy while launching relentless waves of drones and missiles. These attacks specifically target energy infrastructure, a calculated move to inflict maximum suffering on civilians facing brutal temperatures as low as -20°C.
A Call for Ironclad Support
The Liberal Democrats believe that sanctuary at home must be matched by unwavering resolve abroad. We are calling for a "double down" approach, ensuring that our European allies remain united in the face of Russian aggression.
"In the months ahead, it’s crucial we work together with our European partners to double down on our efforts to support Ukraine," "I commend the government’s decision to bolster our support for Ukraine, not only through weapons, ammunition, sanctions, and humanitarian aid, but equally through our compassion and long-term backing here at home." Lee Dillon MP
As a party, we want to extend our deepest thanks to the British public. The generosity shown by households across the UK has been a testament to our national character. We will continue to hold the Government to account to ensure that "long-term backing" remains a promise kept, both for those fighting in the trenches and those building a temporary home on our shores.
