Labour’s ‘Moral Catastrophe’: Liberal Democrats Condemn Deepest Aid Cuts in the G7

The Liberal Democrats have launched a scathing critique of the Labour Government’s decision to slash the international development budget, warning that the move represents a "moral catastrophe" that undermines Britain’s security and global standing.

Liberal Democrat MPs including Monica Harding MP - International Development Spokesperson; raised concern that under the current administration, the UK is set to see a 40% reduction in foreign aid, the steepest decline among G7 nations. The cuts are projected to take UK development spending to its lowest levels this century, falling to a predicted 0.3% of GNI by 2027, even lower than the reductions seen under the previous Conservative government.

A Retreat from the World Stage
The Liberal Democrats have long championed the restoration of the 0.7% GNI target for international development, a commitment enshrined in the party’s manifesto as a cornerstone of a "liberal, outward-looking Britain." Unlike the current government, the Liberal Democrats have pledged an immediate return to the 0.7% target without the restrictive "fiscal conditions" that have been used as an excuse for years of decline.

"This Labour Government is cutting the foreign aid budget by 40%, the steepest in the G7, deeper and further than Trump’s America and lowest level this century. Worse than under the Tories. Bilateral aid to Africa cut by 56%."
"Funding scrapped for the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, risking up to 200,000 children paralysed each year. And just when polio was close to being eradicated. Up to 600,000 avoidable deaths from cuts to global health programmes." Monica Harding MP

The Liberal Democrat Vision: An ‘International Development Superpower’
While the Government retreats, the Liberal Democrats have outlined a bold, alternative path to restore Britain’s reputation. Our International Development policy is built on three key pillars:

Restoring Independence: We would re-establish a dedicated Department for International Development (DfID) with its own Cabinet Minister, ending the "merger muddle" that has diluted the UK's expertise and focus on poverty reduction.

Targeting Poverty, Not Politics: We believe aid must be used for its primary purpose: economic development and poverty reduction in partner countries. We have vocalised strong opposition to the practice of using nearly a third of the aid budget on domestic asylum costs, arguing that international aid should be spent internationally.

Global Health & Climate Leadership: Our policy puts the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the heart of foreign policy. This includes restoring funding for global health initiatives like the Polio Eradication program and ensuring the UK leads on climate finance for the Global South.

The Geopolitical Vacuum
Beyond the humanitarian fallout, Liberal Democrats are warning of a "strategic vacuum." As the UK withdraws from bilateral partnerships, most notably in Africa; hostile actors are moving in.

"These are shameful cut, not only a moral catastrophe but strategically illiterate, weakening Britain’s security and global standing. Handing over influence to Russia and China. When we step back, others step in," Monica Harding MP

By abandoning our partners, the Government is effectively rolling out the red carpet for Russian and Chinese influence. This isn't just a failure of compassion; it's a failure of national security.

The Liberal Democrats will continue to fight for a fair deal for the world’s most vulnerable and a Britain that leads with its values, not just its ledger.
