Lib Dems Propose "Legislative Lock" to Shield BBC from Government Influence
The Liberal Democrats have laid out a bold, necessary plan to save the BBC from those who wish to dismantle it. For too long, our national broadcaster has been treated like a political football, left vulnerable to the whims of whichever government holds the whistle.
As we look toward the 2027 charter renewal, we are calling on the government to act now. We are proposing a Permanent BBC Charter, a "legislative lock" that ensures the BBC’s independence can never be traded away for political favors.
A Shield Against Populism
The BBC is currently under siege. We’ve seen Nigel Farage and Reform UK repeatedly attack its independence, even backing Donald Trump’s attempts to sue our national broadcaster. We cannot allow our public institutions to be hollowed out by those who profit from division.
“Nigel Farage wants to undermine our BBC and its ability to hold a future Reform government to account. We cannot let him. We’ve seen how Farage egged on Donald Trump’s attacks against the BBC... It is a massive conflict of interest but it’s just a taster of what’s to come if Reform were to gain power.” Anna Sabine MP, Media and Sport Spokesperson,
Our Plan for a "Super-Majority" Lock
To ensure the BBC remains a cornerstone of British democracy for generations, we are proposing a fundamental shift in how it is governed:
End the 10-Year Cycle: Replace the expiring 2027 charter with a permanent one to stop the constant threat of defunding or dissolution.
The Two-Thirds Rule: Any future changes to the BBC’s core mission or structure would require a two-thirds "super-majority" in the House of Commons.
Power to the Nations: Changes must also be ratified by the devolved Parliaments in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
No More Political Cronies: We will move to ban all political appointments to the BBC board. We need experts and journalists, not "yes men" for the government of the day.
Exposing the Conflict of Interest
While attacking the BBC, Reform MPs are lining their own pockets. Our analysis reveals that Nigel Farage has earned £750,000 from GB News, while Lee Anderson has taken £100,000. In total, Reform MPs have netted nearly a million pounds from media appearances while trying to tear down the public's broadcaster.
“A Reform Government would undoubtedly pack the BBC board with spineless yes men, stripping the broadcaster of an effective ability to hold them to account. Keir Starmer needs to act now before it’s too late.” — Anna Sabine MP
Standing Up for the World Service
We are also fighting for the BBC World Service. In an era of global disinformation, the World Service is Britain’s best tool for truth. We are calling for a guaranteed budget from the FCDO to protect it from a "funding cliff edge" and ensure it can continue to counter the lies of Britain’s foes.
The Liberal Democrats believe in a BBC that belongs to the people, not the politicians. It’s time to lock the door against populism and protect the truth.
