Lib Dems Call for Mandatory Type 1 Diabetes Testing in Symptomatic Children.
The Liberal Democrats are calling for a fundamental shift in how the NHS approaches pediatric diagnosis, demanding that finger-prick blood glucose tests become standard practice for any child presenting with symptoms of Type 1 diabetes.
Tom Gordon MP and Chair of the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Diabetes, joined campaigner John Story at 10 Downing Street. They delivered the "Lyla’s Law" petition, a movement born from the tragic and preventable death of John’s daughter, Lyla.
A Campaign Rooted in Tragedy and Hope
Lyla Story was just four years old when she passed away from diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA)—a life-threatening complication that occurs when Type 1 diabetes is not diagnosed in time. For the Liberal Democrats, Lyla’s story is a harrowing reminder of the "postcode lottery" and systemic gaps currently facing pediatric care in the UK.
"This week I joined John Story and fellow campaigners at Downing Street to hand in the Lyla’s Law petition. John has been campaigning tirelessly for routine finger-prick diabetes tests for children showing symptoms, following the tragic loss of his daughter Lyla. I also attended the debate on this very petition, where I highlighted the importance of recognising the key symptoms of type 1 diabetes and ensuring quick access to testing when symptoms appear." — Tom Gordon MP,
Why "Standard Practice" Matters
Currently, many parents find themselves turned away or misdiagnosed when their children show the "4 Ts" of Type 1 diabetes:
Toilet (increased urination)
Thirsty (constant thirst)
Tired (extreme fatigue)
Thinner (unexplained weight loss)
The Liberal Democrats argue that a simple, inexpensive finger-prick test, costing the NHS mere pennies, could prevent the emergency hospitalizations that currently account for roughly 25-40% of new Type 1 diagnoses in children.
"Testing for chronic conditions like diabetes, especially in children, is key to preventing heartache for families whilst also saving the NHS money in the long term. " Christine Jardine MP
Liberal Democrat Policy: Fixing the Frontline
The push for Lyla’s Law aligns with the broader Liberal Democrat commitment to restoring frontline healthcare and focusing on preventative medicine. Our party policy emphasises:
Early Intervention: Reducing the strain on A&E departments by equipping GPs and primary care providers with the mandate to test immediately.
The "Right to See a GP": Ensuring that every child showing symptoms can get an appointment within 24 hours, a core pillar of our Health and Care policy.
Support for Carers and Families: Providing better resources for parents to identify symptoms early through public health awareness campaigns.
The Path Forward
As Chair of the APPG for Diabetes, Tom Gordon MP has pledged to keep the pressure on the government to ensure that clinical guidelines are updated. The Liberal Democrats believe that no family should have to endure the loss of a child to a condition that is easily identifiable with the right tools.
"As Chair of the APPG for Diabetes, I will continue to support John in his campaign, to ensure no children lose their lives in the same tragic circumstances," Tom Gordon MP
The Liberal Democrats will continue to fight in Parliament to ensure the NHS is a service that catches illness before it becomes a crisis. It is time for Lyla’s Law to become the national standard.
