People deserve honesty about their energy bills and Liberal Democrats are demanding it.
With millions of households still struggling with the cost of living, the question of who is really profiting from Britain’s energy system has never been more important. Recent analysis has suggested that a significant share of the average UK energy bill goes towards corporate profits across generators, networks and suppliers, raising serious concerns about transparency and fairness in the market.
The Liberal Democrats have been questioning the energy regulator Ofgem and the system operats and pressing regulators for answers.
“Energy companies and networks should be far more transparent about the profits they make. Especially as this directly impacts bills, people deserve to see the breakdown.
I asked Ofgem and the system operator why it is so difficult to give bill payers a clear, accurate figure of what profits the electricity companies are making.” Wera Hobhouse MP
For too long, families and pensioners have faced rising energy costs without a clear explanation of how their money is being spent. Reports suggest billions in excess profits have been made within the system during the cost-of-living crisis, while households have struggled with sky-high bills.
Liberal Democrats believe the public has a right to know exactly where their energy money goes, from generation and network costs to company profits.
Liberal Democrat plan for fairer energy bills
The Liberal Democrats have set out a plan to reform the energy system so that it works for people, not just shareholders. Key policies include:
Breaking the link between gas prices and electricity prices, so households can benefit from cheaper renewable energy.
Investing heavily in renewable energy and home insulation, cutting bills while tackling the climate emergency.
Supporting community energy projects, giving local people a direct stake in clean power generation.
Holding energy companies accountable with stronger regulation through Ofgem and greater transparency in energy pricing and profits.
The transition to clean energy must put communities first. Local communities often face barriers to generating their own clean power, particularly when the cost of connecting projects to the grid makes them unviable.
“Clean energy, community resilience and climate justice aren’t negotiable — they’re overdue.” Pippa Heylings MP
The Liberal Democrats believe in a fairer, cleaner energy future.
Because energy is not a luxury, it is an essential service that every household relies on.
Families deserve a system that is transparent, fair, and focused on cutting bills, not one that leaves people wondering who is really benefiting.
That is why Liberal Democrats will continue pressing regulators, challenging energy companies, and fighting for reforms that put bill payers first.
