Standing with Our Farmers: Why the Government is Failing Both Nature and Food Security.

For too long, the UK government has treated food production and environmental protection as an "either-or" proposition. This false dichotomy is not just outdated, it is actively damaging our rural economy and our national resilience.

"Britain has a nature crisis and a food security crisis. Our farmers are essential in helping us tackle both. It's time this Government stopped undermining British farmers, and instead backed them to produce healthy, nutritious food AND to care for our precious environment." — Tim Farron MP Environment, Food and Rural Affairs spokesperson.

The Crisis of Consistency
The Liberal Democrats believe that since 70% of our land is agricultural, any serious plan for biodiversity must have farmers at its heart. However, the current administration has spent the last year undermining the very people they claim to support.

The abrupt closure of the Sustainable Farming Incentive (SFI) last year, with zero notice and left thousands of farms in financial limbo. While the recent reopening of the SFI is a welcome step, the execution remains flawed. The "first-come, first-served" nature of these schemes creates a tiered system. Those farmers who are wealthier, who have more time on their hands, and who have staff will be able to get in, while smaller farmers, particularly in the uplands will be excluded.

A Roadmap for Rural Britain
We don’t just critique; we offer a roadmap. The Liberal Democrats are calling for a fundamental shift in how we support our rural communities, moving away from a "wrong-headed" bureaucracy and toward a partnership that respects the expertise of those who work the land.

Central to our vision is a massive £1 billion boost to the farming budget. This isn't just a handout; it is a strategic investment to support the transition to nature-friendly farming without compromising output. By providing this financial bedrock, we ensure that food security and environmental restoration go hand-in-hand.

Furthermore, we are committed to rigorous Trade Standards. It is an insult to British farmers to ask them to meet high environmental and welfare bars at home while the government signs trade deals that allow imports produced to much lower standards to undercut them. Every Liberal Democrat trade policy ensures that imports must meet our domestic health and environmental criteria.

Protecting the Guardians of the Uplands
The current government's 50-hectare limitation on the June application window is a glaring oversight. It effectively excludes upland farmers who often farm the commons at the tops of mountains. These are individuals often living on less than the minimum wage, yet they are the literal custodians of our most iconic landscapes.

Liberal Democrat policy includes Specific Upland Support to ensure these unique farming systems remain viable. Without them, we lose not just food production, but the very people who manage carbon-capturing peatlands and prevent downstream flooding.

The Danger of Neglect
Currently, only 55% of the food we consume is produced domestically. In an increasingly volatile geopolitical climate, this is a dangerous vulnerability. Liberal Democrats argue that the "greenest" thing the government can do is keep British farmers farming. By forcing farmers to choose between an environmental grant and a productive field, the government is failing at both.

Liberal Democrats believe , we must move past the errors of the last 40 years. We need to support farmers not just to care for the environment, but to feed us. You can read more about our comprehensive plans for a fairer deal in the Liberal Democrat Manifesto - Food and Farming www.libdems.org.uk/manifesto

The Liberal Democrat message is clear, the path to a sustainable future is paved by the people who know the land best. It’s time the government stopped seeing farmers as a problem to be managed and started seeing them as the solution to our national crises.
