THE SILENCING OF THE TRUTH: Why the UK needs an Anti-SLAPP Law NOW.

​Imagine you are a victim of a crime, a whistleblower at a major corporation, or an investigative journalist who has just uncovered a massive financial scandal. You have the evidence. You have the truth. You are ready to speak out. Then, the post arrives.
​It’s a thick envelope from a high-priced law firm. It isn’t just a rebuttal; it’s a threat. It warns you that if you publish your findings or speak to the authorities, you will be sued for millions. You know you’re right, but you also know that defending yourself in court for the next three years will bankrupt your family and destroy your mental health.
​So, you stay silent.

​This is the reality of SLAPPs (Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation). They aren't about seeking justice; they are about using the legal system as a weapon to bully, intimidate, and silence the public.

The "London Problem"
​For years, London has been dubbed the "libel capital of the world." Our current laws make it too easy for wealthy oligarchs and powerful corporations—often from overseas—to use British courts to shut down criticism. While the European Union has moved forward with a robust Anti-SLAPP Directive to protect its citizens, the UK is lagging behind.

​Without new legislation, we are sending a message to the world: If you have enough money, you can buy silence in the United Kingdom.

​How the Liberal Democrats Policy  
Democracy depends on the ability to hold the powerful to account. Justice should be a right, not a luxury item reserved for those with the deepest pockets.

​Our policies are focused on rebalancing the scales:
​A Clear "Public Interest" Defense: We want to ensure that if someone is speaking out in the public interest, the courts have the power to dismiss these "shakedown" lawsuits immediately before they incur massive costs.

​Cost Protections: We believe in "costs protections" so that campaigners and victims aren't faced with life-altering legal bills just for defending the truth.

​Upholding Free Speech: As part of our commitment to civil liberties, we are calling for a comprehensive Anti-SLAPP Bill to be a centerpiece of the next King's Speech.

Why This Matters to YOU
​This isn’t just a technical legal issue. It affects:
​Environmentalists protesting against sewage dumping in our rivers.
​Victims of crime seeking to name their abusers.
​Local campaigners fighting against unscrupulous developers.
