For a country that prides itself on being a "nation of animal lovers," the UK still harbors a dark secret in its high-street boutiques and online marketplaces. Despite banning fur farming on domestic soil back in 2000, we continue to outsource cruelty by importing fur from abroad.

​The Liberal Democrats believe it is time to close this loophole. We are calling for a comprehensive UK-wide ban on the import and sale of fur, ensuring our trade policy finally reflects the values of the British public.

​For years, the UK has positioned itself as a global pioneer in animal welfare. However, the Liberal Democrats recently believe that reputation is being undermined by our own balance sheets.

​Inhumane Practices: Global fur farming involves intensive confinement and slaughter methods that would be illegal if practiced within the UK.

​Public Health: Post-pandemic, we cannot ignore that intensive fur farms are notorious breeding grounds for zoonotic diseases, posing a genuine risk of future viral outbreaks.

​Economic Irrelevance: The fur trade contributes negligibly to the UK economy, particularly as major fashion houses and retailers have already voluntarily transitioned to high-quality synthetic alternatives.

​Public sentiment is overwhelmingly clear: 76% of the British public support a total ban on fur trading.

​Our commitment to animal welfare is a cornerstone of Liberal Democrat policy. We don't believe in "offshoring" suffering. If a practice is deemed too cruel to occur in a British field, it should be too cruel to be sold in a British shop.
