"Trumpflation" Hits Home: Inflation Spikes to 3.3% Following Conflict in Iran

New figures from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) have confirmed a worrying surge in the UK cost of living, as the economic fallout from Donald Trump’s war in Iran begins to bite. Inflation rose to 3.3% in March, a significant jump from 3% in February, driven primarily by a "fossil fuel shock" that is filtering through to supermarket shelves and household bills.

The Liberal Democrats have warned that the UK is entering a period of "Trumpflation," where reckless foreign policy decisions in Washington are causing direct financial pain for families in the UK.

A Spike Driven by Fuel and Energy
The ONS report highlights that the primary drivers of the increase were heating oil and motor fuels. In just one month:
Petrol prices jumped by 8p per litre.
Diesel prices surged by 17p per litre.

Donald Trump’s idiotic war with Iran, cheered on by Kemi Badenoch and Nigel Farage , is making it far more expensive for people to get around. Families are paying more at the pump because of a war they didn’t start and don’t support. " Ed Davey MP Leader Liberal Democrats.

With the Strait of Hormuz remaining closed, experts warn that domestic energy bills are set to rise again in July and October. The conflict has created a domino effect; as fossil fuel prices rise, the cost of growing, transporting, and chilling food also skyrockets, threatening to push inflation even higher in the coming months.

Lib Dem MPs Demand Emergency Action

"Households are already dipping into savings just to get by. Farmers are asking whether their businesses are still viable. Local shops and employers are being hit from every angle: higher costs, higher business rates, higher NICs. And today’s inflation figures tell us why this matters now: prices rose again in March, taking inflation to 3.3%. " Lee Dillon MP

"Trump’s Iran war is pushing up prices for everyone in shops and at the pump. The impact on the British economy is clear, with fuel prices seeing their biggest increase since early 2023." Charlie Maynard MP

Liberal Democrat MPs are calling for the Labour Government to intervene immediately to protect households from this external economic shock, through a dedicated support package.

Liberal Democrats are calling for an emergency transport package to keep Britain moving, including an immediate cut in fuel duty to bring down prices at the pump by 12p per litre. We also want to see bus and train fares slashed and electric vehicle charging costs cut, to support families in the UK whose bills have skyrocketed. Trump’s war on Iran has only worsened the cost of living crisis, and the Government needs to act now." Daisy Cooper MP - Treasury Spokesperson

The Liberal Democrats have proposed an Emergency Transport Package which would:
Cut fuel duty by 10p (saving 12p per litre at the pump).
Slash bus fares to £1.
Reduce rail fares by 10%.
Reduce VAT on EV charging

“We can’t afford for the Chancellor to stand back, watch people struggle and let Britain’s economy grind to a halt.” Ed Davey MP
"Inexcusable" Support for Trump
While families struggle to make ends meet, the Liberal Democrats have hit out at domestic politicians who have continued to support the former President’s actions.

Liberal Democrat Deputy Leader and Treasury Spokesperson Daisy Cooper MP branded the behaviour of certain political figures as a betrayal of British interests.
"People across our country have been struggling for years with a devastating cost-of-living crisis and Donald Trump’s idiotic war in Iran has added to it,"
"The cost of fuel is soaring, mortgage rates are rising and fixed energy deals are already going up by hundreds of pounds. But what is utterly inexcusable is that there are politicians in this country,Nigel Farage and Kemi Badenoc, who are happy to cheerlead Donald Trump as he hikes people’s bills." Daisy Cooper MP

The party pointed to polling showing that 30% of drivers have already been forced to cut back on other spending to afford fuel, while 49% have reduced their driving altogether. The Lib Dems maintain that "cheering on" the architects of this instability is a dereliction of duty by those who claim to represent the British public.
