Edward Morello MP joins Surfers Against Sewage "paddle out" to fight pollution by water companies.
The battle to save our beautiful coastlines and rivers from toxic sewage dumps took to the water this week! Liberal Democrat MP Edward Morello joined forces with local activists, swimmers, and surfers for a powerful Surfers Against Sewage paddle-out protest.
With the government’s new Water Bill heading to Parliament, the Liberal Democrats are launching a massive legislative campaign to force a total overhaul of the water industry and finally put an end to the environmental destruction of our beaches and waterways.
"An Opportunity for Real Change"
Speaking directly from the frontline of the protest, Edward Morello MP emphasised that the upcoming Parliamentary session is a critical crossroads for the environment:
"Great to join the Surfers Against Sewage paddle out. The Water Bill will be coming before Parliament this session and is our chance to push for real change to end sewage in our rivers and beaches."
"The government's water bill, will get rid of Ofwat and replace it with a new regulator. We'll be tabling lots of amendments in the hope that we can finally end the blight of sewage in the waterways and beaches." Edward Morello MP
The message from the water's edge was clear: the public is sick to death of private water giants treating our precious natural habitats like open sewers while piping massive profits to overseas shareholders and pocketing fat-cat bonuses.
Labour and Tories "Sitting on Their Hands"
While communities suffer, successive governments have failed to take decisive action. Liberal Democrat Environment Spokesperson Tim Farron MP delivered a blistering critique of the ongoing national embarrassment, warning that the government's current proposals simply do not go far enough:
"Pollution, sewage pollution into our lakes, rivers and seas is disgusting. It's harmful to our environment and a threat to the health of our animals, our pets, our livestock, wildlife and indeed to the human beings who swim in our waterways. It's not just disgusting, it's completely outrageous."
The Lib Dem Blueprint to Fix the Sewage Crisis
The Liberal Democrats aren't just joining protests, they are taking a radical, common-sense plan straight to the floor of the House of Commons. As the Water Bill progresses, the party will fight to introduce the following vital amendments:
Public Benefit over Private Profit: Transforming water companies into public benefit corporations. They must be mutually owned by their customers, ensuring every single penny of surplus is reinvested into fixing leaky infrastructure, not lining the pockets of corporate executives.
Total, Unfiltered Transparency: Forcing companies to publish the actual volume of filth discharged into our waters, rather than just reporting the duration of the dumps. No more hiding behind vague data!
A New Regulator with Real Teeth: Scrapping the current, toothless regulatory framework to create a powerhouse Clean Water Authority. This body will have the real teeth needed to heavily penalise polluters and hold them "super-captive" to the public interest.
A National Social Tariff: Guaranteeing that no matter where you live, families struggling with the cost of living will receive a fair, affordable price for a basic human necessity.
If You Pollute, You Must Pay!
The Liberal Democrats firmly believe that the polluter should pay the price, not the taxpayers, and certainly not our vulnerable British wildlife. Looking ahead to the upcoming legislative battles, Tim Farron MP issued a rallying cry for the public to back the party's amendments:
"The bill will help change this... but needs to make sure that there's a proper regulator that can take on the water company to keep our water clean and finally it would make sure the bill price that all of us pay is fair and affordable. Hopefully with your support we can change things for the good."
Do you agree that it’s time to clean up our act and rescue our coastlines?
