Lib Dem MP Andrew George, Celebrates Campaign Win as Motability Pauses Controversial "Drive Smart" Scheme
Liberal Democrat MP Andrew George, secured another major campaign victory following Motability’s decision to halt its highly unpopular "Drive Smart" tracking scheme. The u-turn comes after intense pressure from Andrew George MP and disability rights advocates, who heavily criticised the initiative's invasive requirements.
A Victory Against "Orwellian Surveillance"
The "Drive Smart" scheme had sparked widespread outrage among disabled motorists. Participants were required to keep their smartphones turned on, fully charged, and connected via Bluetooth and location services at all times. Alternatively, they had to agree to have a black box fitted to their vehicle, which critics argued publicly labeled the car as a Motability vehicle.
Andrew George, the Liberal Democrat MP for St Ives, had previously condemned the technology in stark terms.
"I’d described it as an 'Orwellian surveillance' system," George stated. "When Motability Chiefs left my Penzance office just to return to London to reflect on our meeting, they promised to listen, and to review." Andrew George MP
While the Liberal Democrats have welcomed the announced pause, they emphasised that the scheme was not merely inconvenient, but actively harmful. For many disabled individuals, the stringent tracking rules were invasive, deeply stressful, and in some cases, logistically impossible to maintain.
Credit to Local Campaigners
The highlighted the crucial role of grassroots activism in forcing the policy shift, paying particular tribute to a local campaigner who led the charge.
"Particular credit must go to Disability Rights campaigner and constituent, Keron Day," "He’s done a magnificent job, gathered evidence and brilliantly articulated just how damaging and discriminatory the 'Drive Smart' scheme has been for thousands of disabled people." "testament to a young local man who’s proving to be an impressive and talented campaigner," Andrew George
Keoron Day was instrumental in forcing Motability to reconsider. That is of course not to diminish the great work of many others who've done so much to campaign on this outside this constituency.
Next Steps: Challenging the Government
While the Andrew George MP praised Motability’s leadership for being "big enough to change policy" once the damaging impacts became clear, this is only a temporary pause is only the beginning We are urging the organisation to implement major, permanent changes to how they manage their insurance challenges without penalizing disabled drivers.
Moving forward, the Andrew George MP is shifting their focus toward central government policies that negatively impact disabled motorists, including recently introduced mileage limits.
"Next I’m taking on Ministers who’ve caused the introduction of mileage limits which has brought much detriment to disabled customers," "I’ve also urged [Motability] to work with us as we tackle Government ministers to halt the counterproductive tax burden, which will force many disabled people to give up their jobs." Andrew George MP
While today's pause represents a significant win for Andrew George MP and disability advocates alike, the party maintains that the broader battle to protect the rights and independence of disabled drivers is far from over.
