Lib Dems Propose 'Hobby Hubs’ to Combat Loneliness Crisis.

Liberal Democrats Unveil £82m ‘Hobby Hubs’ Plan to Tackle UK Loneliness Crisis.

Anna Sabine MP, the Liberal Democrat Spokesperson for Culture, Media and Sport, has unveiled an ambitious proposal to transform local landmarks into "Hobby Hubs." The initiative seeks to revitalise libraries, community centers, and pubs, turning them into vibrant social anchors designed to tackle what the party calls a "silent epidemic of loneliness" across the UK.

The proposal comes as a direct response to the steady erosion of community infrastructure. Research from the House of Commons Library indicates that since 2015, nearly 500 libraries and leisure centers have shuttered nationwide. In regions like Somerset and B&NES, these closures have forced many residents to pursue interests in isolation or seek interaction solely through digital screens.

Recent data highlights a sharp decline in physical engagement; the average person now spends just 147 hours a year on hobbies, a significant drop from 353 hours in 2020. Sabine has characterized this trend as a "crisis of connection," warning that the loss of physical meeting spaces is detrimental to public well-being.
A Comprehensive Investment Strategy
To combat this decline, the Liberal Democrats have outlined a specific financial roadmap involving £82 million in targeted funding:
£42 Million Annual Investment: Allocated to extend the opening hours of libraries and community centers. It is estimated this could facilitate an additional 300,000 opening hours per year across England.

£40 Million One-Off Grant: A fund dedicated to helping existing hobby groups hold outreach events or purchase essential equipment.

These "Hobby Hubs" would provide shared resources, ranging from sewing machines and musical instruments to cameras and board games, to ensure that financial constraints do not prevent participation. Liberal Democrat leader Sir Ed Davey emphasized that restoring these spaces is essential for the nation's social fabric.
"Sharing a passion with others in your community is one of the most powerful ways to fight loneliness,"  "The Liberal Democrats want to breathe new life into British high streets and community centres to give everyone a place to do what they love, with other people who love it too. It is so important that we do not allow isolation to become the new normal." Ed Davey MP

A Lifeline for All Generations
Anna Sabine MP, a mother of teenagers, echoed these sentiments, noting that these spaces are particularly vital for younger generations who have struggled with the social aftermath of the pandemic.

“Sharing hobbies and passions with peers is a powerful way to fight loneliness, isolation and loss of community in an increasingly online world," "As the parent of teenagers, I know how important it is to provide spaces for them to connect with others, to engage and socialise doing something they love." Anna Sabine MP
There has been a specific impact of the last few years: "Covid saw all of us suffer, not least our younger generations, many of whom suffer from social anxiety. Providing practical, local spaces where people can connect, create and belong is a crucial element to bringing us out of isolation and into community life again.” Anna Sabine MP

Integrating Health and Community
A key pillar of the initiative is the formal integration of the Hobby Hub network into social prescribing programmes. The plan would empower GPs to 'prescribe' participation in these hubs to patients identified as being at risk of isolation, giving healthcare professionals more options to support mental and social well-being.

For the Liberal Democrats, the initiative is about recognising that communal activity is a fundamental necessity.

"Hobbies aren’t a luxury, they are a lifeline," she concluded. "Whether it’s sports or board games, knitting or playing music, these are more than just pastimes; they are social activities that are absolutely necessary to allow for balance for adults and teens alike." Anna Sabine MP
