Lib Dems Warn UK 'Woefully Unprepared' for Climate Change Following Critical Progress Report.

The Liberal Democrats have warned that the UK remains "woefully unprepared" for the escalating impacts of climate change, calling for an immediate and significant injection of funding into climate-resilient infrastructure to safeguard national and economic security.

The warning follows the publication of the Climate Change Committee’s (CCC) five-yearly progress report, which highlights a widening gap between the UK's current adaptation strategies and the accelerating reality of global warming.

The Liberal Democrats believe the findings underscore an urgent need to brace the nation's infrastructure for extreme weather events.

"This report makes clear that we need to be better prepared for heatwaves regularly exceeding 40 degrees," "Inaction on climate adaptation carries a steep price and our hesitancy to act is already undermining our national security, with food security threatened and costs at the pump and at home continuing to spiral." Pippa Heylings MP  Energy Security and Net Zero Spokesperson

Climate Change and the Threat to Food Security
A central pillar of the Liberal Democrat response to the CCC report is the immediate threat climate change poses to British agriculture and food security. Extreme weather, ranging from prolonged droughts to severe seasonal flooding is already disrupting domestic crop cycles, inflating supermarket prices, and squeezing household budgets.

To combat this vulnerability, the Liberal Democrats have championed a parliamentary campaign for a Good Food Bill. This proposed statutory framework would introduce legally binding targets to protect domestic food production, shield consumers from global supply chain shocks, and lower household food insecurity. By establishing long-term legislative certainty, the party argues that farmers and food businesses would gain the confidence needed to invest in sustainable, climate-resilient agricultural practices.

"It is clear that burying our heads in the sand will cost billions in public welfare,""The Government must set robust targets to better prepare across all departments and acting to protect people, homes and communities from the devastating impacts of climate change." Pippa Heylings MP

A Global Challenge: Foreign Aid and Sustainable Development
The Liberal Democrats maintain that domestic resilience cannot be separated from international action. The party is calling for a restored and expanded foreign aid budget specifically earmarked for global climate resilience. They argue that boosting international climate finance is vital to assisting developing nations, which are often the hardest hit by rising temperatures,in adapting to environmental shifts.

Liberal Democrat leadership asserts that failing to support global climate adaptation will only accelerate international instability, drive mass displacement, and exacerbate global food scarcities that ultimately impact the UK.
Political Friction Over Net Zero
The debate over the pace and cost of the green transition remains a central fault line in British politics. The Liberal Democrats have frequently clashed with political rivals who advocate for delaying or scaling back net-zero targets. Heylings directly challenged political opponents for failing to recognize the immediate economic and social threats posed by a changing climate.

“Badenoch and Farage utterly dismiss the scale of this challenge, yet if they actually spoke to farmers or coastal communities, they'd know that we are already feeling the impacts of climate change on our doorstep,” Pippa Heylings MP

With the CCC report signaling that current progress is flatlining, the Liberal Democrats intend to push for legally binding adaptation targets across every government department. Their broader policy framework emphasizes rapid grid decarbonization, aiming for 90% renewable electricity generation by 2030 alongside stricter green building standards and enhanced support for nature-friendly farming.

The Liberal Democrats are committed to prioritising environmental policy on both the domestic and international stage.

“The Liberal Democrats are unapologetic about keeping the climate crisis on the agenda," "We know that people want the facts so they can be better prepared and protect their way of life whilst making the changes necessary. The case for bold, sustained investment in clean energy and resilient infrastructure has never been clearer.” Pippa Heylings MP
