Liberal Democrats Join National Campaign to Ban Flying Rings and Protect UK Seal Populations

The Liberal Democrats have launched a coordinated national push to protect the UK's vulnerable marine wildlife. Partnering with grassroots conservation groups, the party is urging the public to stop purchasing the popular beach toys, which frequently become lethal traps for seal populations across the British coastline.


Steve Darling MP Torquay and Paignton;  has  highlighted the severe animal welfare crisis unfolding in UK waters.
​"Flying rings can be extremely dangerous for seals. Many people are not aware of this when they purchase this type of frisbee; however, they often end up around seals' necks and cut into their skin causing infection and then death" Steve Darling MP 
The Liberal Democrats are throwing their weight behind a targeted campaign organised by the Seal Alliance, a national coalition of regional mammal protection groups. The campaign aims to completely outlaw both the sale and the import of the hollow plastic rings throughout the UK.
​The initiative has already achieved substantial momentum securing support from several high-street giants.  
​"The campaign has already had some success as major retailers like Halfords, Sainsbury's, Waitrose, and John Lewis no longer sell these rings and support the campaign," Steve Darling MP 

​While parliamentary figures target the government nationally, Liberal Democrat local councillors are taking the battle directly to regional holiday hotspots and coastal businesses.

​In northern coastal communities such as Bridlington, Councillor Jayne Phoenix of the East Riding of Yorkshire Council (ERYC) warned that seasonal tourist influxes exacerbate the threat to wildlife.
​"It's that time of year again,"  "Time to highlight the dangers of these flying rings to our juvenile seals around our coastline." Cllr Jayne Phoenix 
​Despite some major retailers acting responsibly, local authorities face resistance from smaller vendors. Regional groups, including the Yorkshire Seal Group, have been working extensively on the ground to convince independent shops to alter their stock, though commercial pressures remain an obstacle.
​"The Yorkshire Seal Group has contacted many businesses asking them to withdraw these from sale,"  "Some still continue to sell them as they are cheap." Cllr Jayne Phoenix 
​Faced with a slow legislative timeline, the Liberal Democrats are pivoting to a dual strategy of retail intervention and direct public education. Party representatives are urging families heading to British beaches to swap out the hollow plastic rings for solid discs or softer alternatives.
​"It is important that all adults educate themselves and their children of the dangers of using rings such as these; particularly on the beach. If possible bye a solid traditional  style frisbee istead" Cllr Phoenix

​The campaign forms part of a wider effort by the party to elevate marine conservation on the national political agenda. The stakes extend beyond individual animal welfare to the preservation of Britain's natural biodiversity: "Our seals are a fantastic part of the nature on offer in many coastal areas and they need our support." Steve Darling MP
