Lib Dem MP Warns of "National Emergency" as Broken Fridges Pile Up Across England and Wales

​A mounting crisis is overwhelming waste centres across England and Wales, where a growing backlog of broken fridges and freezers threatens to spill over into widespread fly-tipping. The Local Government Association (LGA) has warned that extreme heat waves this year have driven up equipment failures, while a sharp decline in domestic processing capacity has left local authorities unable to cope.

​Dozens of councils have been forced to suspend white goods collections entirely or introduce strict temporary booking restrictions. The crisis has been triggered by the closure of three of the UK's ten full-scale processing plants over the past 12 months due to a fire, bankruptcy, and a change of use. Compounding the issue, remaining domestic facilities must shut down when temperatures exceed 30°C, forcing the UK to increasingly export appliances to Europe for safe handling.

​Liberal Democrat MP for Didcot and Wantage, Olly Glover, has slammed the growing backlog as a critical threat to local infrastructure and the environment, warning that cutting off legal disposal routes directly fuels the risk of illegal dumping.

​"The growing fridge and freezer disposal backlog is becoming a national emergency, affecting constituents across the country," said Olly Glover MP.

​The Olly Glover MP and colleagues have pressed government ministers for immediate intervention to relieve pressure on local authorities and protect communities from illegal dumping.

​"I have written to the Minister alongside my colleagues to ask what is being done to relieve the pressure on local authorities, and to prevent the threat of fly-tipping," Olly Glover MP added.

​With 26 councils halting fridge collections this month alone, residents face severe disruption. Many areas have introduced temporary six-week restrictions on daily booking slots, limiting appointments to just one week in advance. When councils are forced to suspend legal disposal avenues, experts and local leaders warn that desperate residents or rogue operators are far more likely to abandon hazardous white goods illegally in lanes, fields, and urban backstreets.

​Fridges require specialist dismantling due to harmful gases trapped within their cooling systems that damage the atmosphere if punctured. While producer compliance schemes are legally responsible for funding appliance recycling, current infrastructure cannot match demand, and only one new processing plant is scheduled to open across the UK next year.

​Local leaders are urging Westminster to compel white goods manufacturers to shoulder a greater share of the financial burden, subsidize emergency council storage costs, and fast-track alternative processing routes such as utilising Unimetals to alleviate the strain. Without swift national intervention, parliamentarians warn the situation will deteriorate rapidly.

​"The situation is at risk of worsening, the longer this is left, and if national treatment capacity remains constrained, the council cannot rule out suspending waste fridges and freezers collection completely,"  Olly Glover MP.
