Andy Burnham Urged to Fast-Track Postponed UK-EU Summit to Revive British Economy

Pressure is mounting on the government to reset its relationship with Europe following a notable omission during Prime Minister's Questions. When pressed by Liberal Democrat leader Ed Davey to provide a firm date for the postponed UK-EU Summit, the Prime Minister declined to name one, leaving the timeline for future diplomatic engagement shrouded in uncertainty.

​In response to the exchange, Liberal Democrat Europe Spokesperson and MP Al Pinkerton sharply criticised the delay, emphasising that diplomatic intent must be matched with concrete scheduling.

​"The Prime Minister says he wants to work more closely with our European neighbours. But this relationship urgently needs a date."

​Political insiders are now looking toward regional leadership to force the issue, with Pinkerton arguing that Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham should step into the breach. According to the Liberal Democrats, Burnham must use his platform and influence to drag the stalled UK-EU Summit back onto the official calendar.

​Proponents of the summit argue it should serve as a vital economic lever rather than a mere diplomatic formality. The stated objective is to leverage the high-level meeting to dismantle the regulatory and trade barriers currently hindering British businesses, thereby restoring momentum to a sluggish domestic economy.
