Lib Dems: Local Government reorganisation pause: “an embarrassing and chaotic climbdown” for the Government.

Plans for local government reorganisation have been abruptly paused following the emergence of new legal advice, triggering fierce criticism from opposition figures.

​The sudden policy reversal has left cash-strapped councils stranded after they spent substantial financial resources developing structural proposals that central government had previously assured them were legally watertight.

​Many local authorities, operating on the frontline to deliver crucial community provisions such as adult social care and special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) support, had pinned their financial survival on the proposed reorganisation framework. With the process grinding to a halt, numerous councils face an uncertain future that threatens essential services and vulnerable residents.

​Condemning the handling of the situation, Liberal Democrat Local Government Spokesperson Zöe Franklin MP labeled the move an “embarrassing and chaotic climbdown”.

 “This is an embarrassing and chaotic climbdown, which has resulted in already cash-strapped councils wasting huge sums on plans the Government told them were legally watertight."
