Lib Dems Hit Out at Conservatives’ “Despicable” Defence Plans Targeting the Vulnerable

​The Liberal Democrats have launched a scathing attack on the Conservative Party’s newly unveiled defence spending strategy, labeling the proposals as "despicable" and warning they disproportionately target the nation's most vulnerable citizens.


​The backlash follows the Conservative Party's formal announcement regarding its long-term defence plans. Responding to the policy, Liberal Democrat Defence Spokesperson James MacCleary MP launched a sharp critique of the Conservative Party’s historical record on national security and economic management.

​"The Conservative Party spent nearly a decade hollowing out our military,leaving our Army and Navy at their smallest since the Napoleonic and Civil Wars, while undermining our security through their botched Brexit deal," James MacCleary MP 
​The Liberal Democrat frontbencher argued that the financial shortfall plaguing the defense sector is a direct consequence of previous governance. He asserted that the political choices made by past Conservative administrations compromised both economic stability and military readiness.

​"We wouldn’t be in this position if they hadn’t ripped us out of Europe and torched our economy to the tune of up to £90 billion in lost tax revenues just last year." "To now try to fill the black hole they created by piling the cost onto the poorest and most vulnerable children is despicable. It’s always those with the least that are left to pay the highest price with the Conservatives." James MacCleary MP 

​Instead of the approach put forward by the Conservatives, the Liberal Democrats are promoting alternative mechanisms to bolster national security. James MacCleary highlighted the party’s distinct policy proposals, which aim to inject capital into the armed forces without impacting public services or disadvantaged communities.

​"The Liberal Democrats have consistently set out a responsible way to give our Armed Forces the funding boost they urgently need,"  "Defence Bonds would raise £20 billion over two years and provide a secure, ring-fenced way to strengthen our sovereign capability and support our defence sector." James MacCleary MP 

​Concluding his remarks, James  MacCleary emphasised that broader economic reforms remain vital to sustaining long-term national defense. He pointed to European trade alignment as a key component of the party's overarching financial strategy.
​"Our plan to rejoin the single market would turbocharge our economy, delivering the tax revenues needed to rebuild our defences and end this inexcusable era of stagnation," James MacCleary MP
